The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has updated its State Operations Manual (SOM) for surveyors with interpretive guidelines that reflect revised conditions of participation in the September 2019 discharge planning and burden reduction final rules.
While most provisions of these rules were effective Nov. 29, 2019, changes regarding hospital antibiotic stewardship programs and regulations for quality assessment and performance improvement programs do not go into effect until March 30, 2020, and March 30, 2021, respectively. Revised interpretive guidelines for these provisions are expected this spring.
CMS in January will release an online training about the revised requirements for surveyors. The agency expects to approve revisions to accrediting organization standards by February.
