CMS to Launch Five-Star Quality Ratings for HCAHPS

Beginning with the April 2015 release of Hospital Compare data, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) plans to add five-star quality ratings for the patient satisfaction survey known as  the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). The ratings will reflect the level of satisfaction among patients discharged between July 2013 and June 2014.

Prior to April 2015, CMS will provide a dry run of the HCAHPS star ratings from Sept. 15, 2014 to Oct. 14, 2014. During the dry run period, hospitals are encouraged to view their results and provide input to CMS on how to improve the disclosure of these ratings. Following the dry run period, the ratings will be provided in the December preview reports for informational purposes only.

CMS plans to host a national provider call in the coming weeks. Please contact Xiaoyi Huang, director of policy, at or 202.585.0127 with questions or comments.
