CMS Resources Prepare Providers for New Medicare Cards

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released additional resources ahead of the transition to new Medicare beneficiary cards.

CMS will issue new Medicare cards to beneficiaries beginning April 1. The cards will have a new Medicare beneficiary identifier (MBI) to replace the existing health insurance claim number (HICN), which was based on the beneficiary’s Social Security number.

During the transition period, which runs through Dec. 31, 2019, providers may use either the HICN or the MBI on payment claims. Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, providers will be required to use the MBI.

The new resources include information on what providers must do to prepare to use the new cards, a timeline of implementation, and examples of remittance transactions. CMS on Oct. 1 will begin sending remittance advice documents when a provider submits a claim using an HICN.
