CMS Requests Letters of Intent for Direct Contracting Models

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) shared a letter of intent (LOI) online form for health care providers interested in participating in the professional or global direct contracting (DC) options under the new Primary Cares Initiative.

The  DC payment model options, set to begin Jan. 1, 2020, focus on care for patients with complex, chronic needs and provide a voluntary option that allows beneficiaries to align with a chosen provider. Participants will receive a fixed monthly payment ranging from a portion of anticipated primary care costs to the total cost of care.

Health care providers in the global option will bear full financial risk of shared savings and losses on the total cost of care for aligned beneficiaries, while those in the professional payment model option will bear risk for 50 percent of shared savings and losses. Final shared savings and losses will depend on quality measure scores for outcomes and patient experience.

Providers interested in participating in the professional or global options must submit a nonbinding LOI form by Aug. 2.
