CMS Reopens CEHRT Hardship Exception Period

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it will reopen the submission period for hospitals and eligible professionals to claim a hardship exception for not demonstrating meaningful use. This exception will allow hospitals and eligible professionals to avoid 2015 Medicare payment penalties. Hospitals and professionals are only eligible for a hardship exception if they have been unable to fully implement 2014 edition certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) due to delays in 2014 edition CEHRT availability and were unable to attest by the earlier deadlines. Applications are due Nov. 30.
