CMS Releases Price Transparency FAQs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released frequently asked questions (FAQs) on a new requirement that hospitals make public a list of their standard charges via the internet. The requirement, in the fiscal year 2019 hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System final rule, starts Jan. 1, 2019.

The document requires hospitals to post a list of prices for all services available at the hospital in an appropriate format of their choice, as long as the list represents current standard charges as reflected in the hospital’s charge master.

The FAQs also explain:

  • the definition of “machine readable” and a list of appropriate file formats;
  • how the requirements relate to state- and hospital-specific transparency efforts; and
  • which hospitals fall under the new requirement.
