The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released two new resources outlining the agency’s efforts to combat the opioid epidemic.
- prevention of new cases of opioid use disorder (OUD);
- treatment of patients who have already become dependent on or addicted to opioids; and
- use of data to target prevention and treatment activities.
In these resources, the agency provides an overview of the crisis, including the prevalence of OUD overall and among Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. The agency then highlights successes so far, including coverage of medication-assisted treatment and raising awareness. CMS also describes future plans, such as increased access to a broad range of treatment and promotion of data sharing across the care continuum.
