CMS Releases Hospital Medicare Payment Data

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released Medicare data on average hospital charges and payments for 2013. These data include information on discharges, average covered charges, average total payments, and average Medicare payments for the 100 most common diagnoses for Medicare patients requiring inpatient stays and 30 selected outpatient procedures. This marks the third year CMS has released these data in an attempt to increase transparency and give patients, providers, and researchers the information needed to make informed health care decisions and drive delivery system innovation. CMS has also released similar data for physicians. CMS plans to continue to release data annually as part of its work to achieve better care, smarter spending, and healthier people.
