CMS Releases Additional Price Transparency FAQs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released additional frequently asked questions (FAQs) on a new requirement that hospitals make public a list of their standard charges via the internet.

The requirement, included in the fiscal year 2019 Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) final rule, is effective Jan. 1, 2019. The agency previously released an FAQ document in the fall.

The new FAQs clarify that the requirements apply to all hospitals operating within the United States, including:

  • inpatient rehabilitation facilities;
  • inpatient psychiatric hospitals;
  • critical access hospitals; and
  • sole community hospitals.

CMS also provides justification for its decision not to consider PDF documents machine readable, as required under the IPPS. As for noncompliance, the agency notes it will address in future rulemaking specific additional future enforcement or other actions that they may take with the guidelines.
