CMS Provides Details on Ambulance Service Model Application

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is requesting applications for the new Emergency Triage, Treat, and Transport (ET3) payment model.

The voluntary, five-year ET3 model has a phased-in application approach and is expected to start in 2020. The model will test two new ambulance payments for Medicare beneficiaries who access 911 services:

  • payment for treatment with a qualified health provider in place, either on the scene or through telehealth services; and
  • payment for unscheduled emergency transport to alternative destinations, including primary care physician offices, urgent care clinics, and other destinations not covered under current regulations.

The online application period opens in this summer, and this request for applications notice gives potential applicants the opportunity to preview the requirements. CMS also shared frequently asked questions and recorded webinars about the new model .
