CMS Opens Applications for Extended Bundled Payment Model

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on Feb. 21 began accepting applications for its third cohort of participants in the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced (BPCI Advanced) Model.

Introduced in January 2018, BPCI Advanced is a voluntary payment model under which a single bundled payment covers services furnished by various providers across care settings. In 2022, the agency outlined its plan to extend the program through 2025.

The extension will:

  • Adjust the payment methodology in an effort to balance Medicare savings with incentives for model participation.
  • Require new convener participants to be Medicare providers, suppliers, or accountable care organizations (ACOs).
  • Provide additional technical assistance.

Acute care hospitals, physician groups, and Medicare ACOs can apply to participate in the value-based program for two years beginning in January 2024. Current participants can sign an amended participation agreement to participate in the two-year extension. Applications close May 31.
