CMS Innovation Center Releases New Patient Engagement Models

The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation has developed two new Beneficiary Engagement and Incentives models to test different shared decision-making approaches.

The models, designed to increase Medicare beneficiaries’ engagement in their health care decisions, are the:

  • Shared Decision Making Model, which will integrate a four-step shared decision-making process into the processes of clinicians in accountable care organizations; and
  • Direct Decision Support Model, which will facilitate shared decision-making by an organization outside of the clinical delivery system that offers health management and other services.
