CMS Extends Delay of Two-Midnight Policy

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) extended its delay of the two-midnight policy through April 30. The agency cited impending Senate consideration of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (H.R. 2) as reason for its latest delay in enforcing the policy. This bill, which has passed the House, would further delay enforcement of the policy through Oct. 1.

During the delay, Medicare administrative contractors and recovery audit contractors will not conduct postpayment patient status reviews on inpatient admissions with dates of admission between Oct. 1, 2013, and April 30, 2015.
