CMS Develops Postpartum Care Toolkit for State Medicaid Agencies

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new toolkit to help state Medicaid programs reduce rates of morbidity, mortality, and disparities in postpartum care. The toolkit aims to help states increase postpartum care access, quality, and equity for Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) beneficiaries by maximizing existing Medicaid authorities.

The toolkit provides:

  • A strategy checklist.
  • Strategies to increase access to, improve quality of, and mitigate disparities in postpartum care.
  • Strategies to implement quality measurement and improvement approaches.
  • The 2023 core set of maternal and perinatal health measures for Medicaid and CHIP.

The toolkit discusses suggestions for partnering with Medicaid managed care plans; policy, programmatic, and payment mechanisms for postpartum care; evidence-based strategies; and approaches to measuring progress to improve access, quality, and equity in postpartum care.
