CMS Delays Sepsis Quality Measure

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that data collection for a chart-abstracted sepsis measure has been delayed until further notice. The delay is based on a recommendation from the National Quality Forum (NQF) that the measure may not be sufficient enough to be effective. This measure was part of the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program and was originally included in the Inpatient Prospective Payment System final rule for fiscal year (FY) 2015. Data collection for this measure was scheduled to begin Jan. 1, 2015, for the FY 2017 Hospital IQR Program. The delay does not affect data collection for any other measures.
