The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced Dec. 6 that it will delay the meaningful use implementation timeline for the Medicare and Medicaid electronic health record (EHR) Incentive programs, which provide payments to hospitals and eligible professionals that adopt and meaningfully use EHRs. Under the new timeline, hospitals have an additional year to meet Stage 2 requirements—through fiscal year (FY) 2016. Stage 3 will begin in FY 2017, instead of FY 2016, for hospitals that complete at least two years of Stage 2.
