CMS Cancels New ACO Model for Dual Eligibles

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will not move forward with implementation of a new accountable care organization (ACO) model for beneficiaries eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation’s Medicare-Medicaid ACO (MMACO) model was announced in December 2016, at which point CMS began accepting letters of intent from states interested in designing and launching the model. Several states expressed early interest in the MMACO model, but CMS did not receive any letters of intent for the 2018 start date and only one letter of intent for 2019.
