The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has awarded planning grants to 15 state Medicaid agencies to support a demonstration project to increase the treatment capacity of Medicaid providers to deliver substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery services.
The 18-month grants seek to increase the ability of Medicaid providers to deliver SUD treatment and recovery services by:
- assessing the state’s SUD treatment needs;
- providing recruitment, training, and technical assistance for Medicaid providers; and
- improving reimbursement for an increased number or capacity of Medicaid providers.
State Medicaid agencies that received grants included:
- Alabama;
- Connecticut;
- Delaware;
- District of Columbia;
- Illinois;
- Indiana;
- Kentucky;
- Maine;
- Michigan;
- Nevada;
- New Mexico;
- Rhode Island;
- Washington;
- Virginia; and
- West Virginia.
The funding was authorized by the Substance Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities (SUPPORT) Act and supports the CMS Roadmap Fighting the Opioid Epidemic and other efforts to address the opioid crisis.
