The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved a five-year extension of Florida’s Managed Medical Assistance Section 1115 demonstration waiver.

The demonstration allows the state to operate a capitated Medicaid managed care program and a low-income pool to provide support for providers that fill a safety-net role by caring for the uninsured. The extension lasts through June 2022.

The waiver renewal includes new provisions intended to increase state flexibility and eliminate duplicative state reporting activities. The demonstration also allows the state increased freedom in how it uses demonstration funds. CMS will also monitor Florida’s progress as it moves toward its own state-selected benchmarks and develops a program evaluation.

In a March letter to governors, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and CMS Administrator Seema Verma expressed a desire to allow states increased flexibility to develop innovative approaches within the Medicaid program.
