CMS Announces Star Ratings for Quality Comparison

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it will introduce star ratings to its quality comparison tools: Hospital Compare, Dialysis Facility Compare, and Home Health Compare. Patrick Conway, MD, MSc, CMS deputy administrator for innovation and quality and chief medical officer, explains in a blog post that the implementation of star ratings is part of an effort to make information on quality of care easier for patients to understand and compare so patients can make informed health care decisions. Rollout for these star ratings will begin later this year and continue into early 2015. Star ratings are already used on Nursing Home Compare and for physician group practices on Physician Compare.
