The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released a list of 561 Medicare accountable care organizations (ACOs) for the 2018 performance year of the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), including 124 new participants.
This year, 55 participants will take part in the MSSP Track 1+ model, a risk-bearing track that subjects providers to penalties for negative outcomes and allows them to qualify for greater rewards as an advanced alternative payment model through the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act.
MSSP ACOs promote collaboration among providers, including hospitals, with the goal of coordinating care and basing payment on the quality of patient health outcomes, rather than the volume of services provided.
The ACOs now serve 10.5 million Medicare patients, up 1.5 million from 2017.
