According to a Dec. 23 press release from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), 123 new Medicare accountable care organizations (ACOs) have been formed, providing high-quality, coordinated care to about 1.5 million Medicare beneficiaries. ACOs enable hospitals and health care providers to work together to improve quality of care and slow health care cost growth. More than 360 organizations have formed Medicare ACOs, serving more than 5.3 million people. At least two members of America’s Essential Hospitals, MetroHealth in Cleveland and the University of Kansas, are participating in a new ACO.
