New data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) find that Medicare accountable care organizations (ACOs) generated about $314 million in net savings to Medicare in 2017.
According to CMS, 472 ACOs in the Medicare Shared Savings Program cared for 9 million program beneficiaries. The data, released Aug. 30, show that Medicare ACOs generated $1.1 billion in savings, of which $780 million was allocated, leaving the program with $313.7 million in net savings (after accounting for bonuses paid to ACOs).
In addition, the data show that 60 percent of ACOs saved money in 2017 and 34 percent earned shared savings, up from 56 percent and 31 percent, respectively, in 2016.
