America’s Essential Hospitals, along with 21 other provider groups, signed a June 10 letter urging leaders of the Senate Finance and House Energy and Commerce Committees to sustain federal primary care payment policy in Medicaid until at least Dec. 31, 2016. The Affordable Care Act stipulates that state Medicaid programs must reimburse family, internal medicine, and pediatric physicians at rates at least equal to Medicare rates for calendar years 2013-2014. In the letter, the groups argued that sustaining this reimbursement policy is critical to ensuring that primary care physicians participate in the Medicaid Program and Medicaid patients have access to primary care services. The groups also urged Congress to consider physicians practicing obstetrics and gynecology eligible for the enhanced payment if most of the Medicaid services they provide are primary care services.
