Association Members Advocate on Hill for Essential Hospitals

Members of America’s Essential Hospitals attended more than 100 meetings with members of Congress and key congressional staff as part of the fall Policy Assembly on Oct. 27 and 28. During these meetings, member leaders from across the country educated Congress on the important role of essential hospitals and these actions Congress can take to help essential hospitals serve vulnerable patients:

  • protect critical Medicaid funding streams for essential hospitals, including supplemental payments
  • preserve the 340B Drug Pricing Program, which helps hospitals provide access to essential services
  • support S. 688 and H.R. 1343, which would require risk adjustment for sociodemographic factors in pay-for-performance programs
  • freeze cuts to Medicare disproportionate share hospital payments

The event also included insights from Capitol Hill staff; remarks by Cecilia Muñoz, assistant to the president and director of the White House Domestic Policy Council; and a reception on Capitol Hill honoring this year’s Gage Award winners and honorable mention recipients. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL), and Rep. Curt Clawson (R-FL) recognized the outstanding work of essential hospitals in their districts. Rep. James McGovern (D-MA) also attended the reception to spend time with Massachusetts hospital leaders in town for the Policy Assembly.
