America’s Essential Hospitals has responded to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS’) proposed physician fee schedule for calendar year 2018.
The proposed rule would further cut payments to non-excepted provider-based departments (PBDs) to 25 percent of the Medicare Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) rate and change certain quality reporting requirements.
In its comments, the association recommended that CMS:
- ensure that non-excepted PBDs are reimbursed at no lower than 75 percent of OPPS payment rate;
- continue to refine quality measures for accountable care organizations under the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), including risk adjustment for sociodemographic factors;
- finalize proposals to reduce administrative burden within the MSSP and find ways to further encourage participation by essential hospitals; and
- further delay implementation of patient relationship categories and codes.
