Association President and CEO Meets With Senior HHS Officials

America’s Essential Hospitals President and CEO Bruce Siegel, MD, MPH, met with senior federal officials Sept. 4 to discuss health insurance coverage expansion activities and how those activities will impact hospitals. Marilyn Tavenner, administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and Bill Corr, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), spoke with national hospital association leaders and select hospital CEOs about implementing the Affordable Care Act. Siegel highlighted the fact that Medicaid disproportionate share hospital payments will continue to be critical for essential hospitals as the open enrollment date for the new health insurance marketplaces (exchanges) approaches. Siegel made the case for delaying the cuts to these payments that are scheduled to begin Oct. 1.
