America’s Essential Hospitals Issues Health Equity Principles

These board-approved principles, recently developed by the association’s policy advisory committee, demonstrate essential hospitals’ responsibility to promote equity of care and our commitment to this issue. The principles, which constitute the association’s official position on care equity, also support risk adjustment for sociodemographic status in certain quality improvement measures.

Principles on Equity of Care, America’s Essential Hospitals, December 2014

As policymakers discuss improvements to innovative pay-for-performance programs, we urge them
to consider these principles, which address the following:

  • collaborative solutions
  • cultural competence for employees
  • recognizing community-specific needs
  • patient engagement
  • business intelligence – infrastructure and data
  • incentives
