America’s Essential Hospitals Asks HHS to Extend EHR Deadlines

America’s Essential Hospitals and nearly 50 other provider groups sent a letter Feb. 21 to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) expressing concern over providers’ ability to comply with Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program requirements. The groups are specifically concerned with the requirement for providers to adopt the 2014 Edition of Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT) and meet criteria for demonstrating meaningful use (MU) of EHR technology. In the letter, the groups recommended HHS take two actions:

  1. “Extend the time for providers to implement 2014 Edition of CEHRT software and meet the program requirements” for MU through 2015.
  2. Add flexibility in MU requirements to enable providers to “achieve success in the program.”

The groups state that providers need “adequate time to learn how to use the newly developed technology, including examining staff assignments, workflows, and practice processes.” They also state that “if providers move forward … our concerns regarding a rushed implementation are heightened.”
