AHRQ State Snapshots Highlight Geographic Disparities in Care

Updated state snapshots from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) show disparities in health care quality from state to state.

These snapshots, built with data from the 2016 National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report, evaluate performance on 250 measures, including:

  • occurrence of diseases and conditions;
  • health status of priority populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, older adults, rural patients, and low-income patients;
  • insurance status;
  • access to care;
  • type of care; and
  • care setting.

These snapshots allow health care providers and officials to compare performance with other states, identify areas for improvement, and find models for best practices. Overall, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maine, and North Dakota were the highest-performing states, based on these measures.

AHRQ also has published resources to help states tackle disparities and improve quality performance.
