Advocates Push Medicaid Expansion Ballot Initiatives

Medicaid expansion advocates hope to leverage ballot initiatives to drive the issue in several Republican-led states, a strategy that led to expansion approval in Idaho, Nebraska, and Utah in the 2018 midterm elections.

Proponents now are collecting voter signatures in Florida, Missouri, and Oklahoma for 2020 ballot initiatives to expand Medicaid. If the petitioning and ballot initiatives are successful:

  • Florida would expand Medicaid to approximately 837,000 people;
  • Missouri would expand Medicaid to approximately 219,000 people; and
  • Oklahoma would expand Medicaid to approximately 200,000 people.

Today, 14 states, largely with Republican governors or legislatures, have yet to expand Medicaid.
