America’s Essential Hospitals Applauds Bill to Remedy Physician Shortages

WASHINGTON — America’s Essential Hospitals thanks Reps. Joe Crowley (D-NY) and Ryan Costello (R-PA) for their bipartisan leadership to support our nation’s teaching hospitals and the next generation of health care professionals.

Their legislation, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act, responds to a growing physician shortage that threatens access to health care for all Americans, especially vulnerable people in underserved communities.

The bill also would provide needed support for essential hospitals, which train nearly seven times as many physicians as other U.S. teaching hospitals—an average of 35 residents beyond their graduate medical education funding cap.

We urge Congress to pass this important legislation quickly to ensure the nation can meet the demand for high-quality health care for all.
