The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on June 27 recommended that everyone ages 6 months and older receive the updated 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine this fall and winter. The updated vaccine will target the JN.1 omicron subvariant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
The CDC notes that those who received a 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccine saw greater protection against illness and hospitalization than those who did not receive a 2023–2024 vaccine.
As of June 25, the CDC estimates that COVID-19 infections have grown or likely grown in 44 states and territories. Since May 10, the agency has calculated the measure of transmission based on emergency department visit data reported through the National Syndromic Surveillance Program.
