In an informational bulletin published Sept. 20, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced all states must assess their compliance with federal Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program renewal requirements, demonstrate compliance, and submit a plan to remediate noncompliance to CMS by Dec. 31.
Compliance plans should specifically detail how states will achieve compliance by Dec. 31, 2026.
In standardizing the process, CMS hopes states can achieve compliance with Medicaid renewal requirements in the most timely and efficient manner.
The agency has continued to monitor states’ compliance with federal Medicaid renewal requirements during Medicaid unwinding and has required mitigation efforts for states to come into compliance, including reinstating beneficiaries or temporarily pausing renewal processing to protect coverage for eligible individuals.
CMS intends to provide updated guidance on renewal requirements and published a compliance assessment and plan template; completed plans will be posted on Medicaid.gov.
The agency also published additional renewal compliance guidance.
