The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Aug. 26 awarded a total of $100 million in grants to 44 navigator organizations helping underserved communities, consumers, and small businesses find and enroll in quality health care in states that use the federally facilitated and state partnership marketplaces. These grants are part of a commitment for up to $500 million over the next five years.
The announcement comes before marketplace open enrollment begins Nov. 1. Navigators must focus outreach on key underserved groups, including:
- Racial and ethnic minorities
- Rural communities
- LGBTQIA+ communities
- Refugees
- Immigrants
- Low-income families
- Pregnant and expectant parents
- People who lack transportation and internet access
- People with low English language proficiency
