Telehealth interventions produce positive results for patients with certain chronic conditions, including cardiovascular and respiratory disease, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) concludes in a new brief.
AHRQ said patients who receive communication, counseling, or monitoring remotely for these conditions experienced improved outcomes through
- reduced hospital admissions;
- decreased mortality; and
- improved quality of life.
Researchers used evidence mapping to synthesize previous systematic reviews of telehealth outcomes. AHRQ recommended future study of potential uses for telehealth services in intensive care units and for maternal and child health.
