In response to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance for fully vaccinated people, several states have lifted their statewide mask mandates, including:
- Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) released guidance on May 3 aligning the state’s mask directives with CDC guidelines;
- Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) released a video statement indicating the state will follow CDC’s recommendations for fully vaccinated individuals;
- Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) announced the state will follow the recent CDC guidelines and that the state will fully list COVID-19 restrictions by June 30; and
- Illiniois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) announced he will revise executive orders in the state to match CDC guidance and continue following science.
However, governors from other states are approaching the new guidance with more caution. California, New Jersey, and New York governors continue to review federal guidance and have not implemented any changes immediately.
Meanwhile, 14 other states that originally implemented mask requirements have lifted them in the past several months, including Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.
