RWJF Announces Health and Climate Solutions Funding Opportunities

January 18, 2019

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has announced a new funding opportunity for organizations that have developed and implemented approaches to address climate change adaptation and mitigation while promoting health equity. Essential Hospitals Institute — the research and quality arm of America’s Essential Hospitals  seeks to partner with member hospitals that have launched programs to improve community health while reducing waste, energy use, and environmental impact.

Interventions can focus on one or more determinants of health, such as:

  • air quality;
  • energy sources;
  • transportation or mobility design;
  • food and water systems;
  • housing; and
  • health systems.

The goal of this funding opportunity is to help build evidence around successful strategies and interventions, and to share lessons learned. Grant funds will support research and evaluation activities, as well as communication and dissemination efforts to share best practices broadly.

The Institute recognizes that essential hospitals serve communities that are especially vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change. RWJF specifically encourages first-time applicants, applicant organizations representing diverse geographic areas, and applicants serving communities that are disproportionately vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Brief proposals are due Feb. 8 at 3 pm ET. Semifinalists will be notified March 6 and asked to submit full proposals by April 3 at 3 pm ET. Eligible organizations must already have implemented an intervention that addresses a determinant of health, and it must have been active for at least one year by the Feb. 8 application date.

For more information, see the funding opportunity brochure or view the recording of RWJF’s informational webinar.

Any eligible members interested in partnering with the Institute on this endeavor may contact Iti Madan at imadan@essentialhospitals.org.
