Pennsylvania Expands Medicaid through Healthy PA

September 3, 2014
Matt Buechner

On Aug. 29, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approved Pennsylvania’s Medicaid expansion waiver, which will increase access to health care for about 500,000 Pennsylvanians, starting Jan. 1, 2015. Through this waiver, eligible Pennsylvanians with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL) will be eligible to buy managed care plans on the private market. Beginning in year two, individuals with incomes above 100 percent of the FPL will have to pay monthly premiums, up to 2 percent of their household income. If they engage in specified healthy behaviors, premiums and cost sharing for the following year can be reduced.
