The American Hospital Association released a resource Sept. 5 highlighting hospital violence prevention programs. This resource was developed as part of the Community Connections Initiative, which supports and highlights the work that hospitals do in their communities to improve patient health. Four members of America’s Essential Hospitals were profiled for their innovative community programs.

  • Virginia Commonwealth University’s Bridging the Gap program has helped young people and their families enroll in intensive case management and access services and support that can help them break the cycle of violence.
  • Boston Medical Center’s Violence Intervention Advocacy Program works with about 400 young patients a year and has reduced recidivism by about 30 percent from 2007 to 2012.
  • Wishard-Eskenazi Health has seen success in its Prescription for Hope program, which has led to a reduction in the number of patients who return to the hospital with a traumatic injury.
  • UMass Memorial Health Care’s HOPE Coalition develops youth leadership as a way to reduce youth violence.
