HHS Announces Navigator Funding, New Open Enrollment Report

May 2, 2021

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced its largest funding opportunity to increase access to enrollment assistance for consumers.

The Centers for Medicare & Services will make $80 million in grants available for navigator outreach and enrollment efforts in the federal marketplace for the 2022 plan year. Navigators are trained individuals who help consumers review their health coverage options and complete eligibility and enrollment forms. Open enrollment for 2022 will begin Nov. 1.

Details about the navigator grants, including eligibility requirements and navigator duties, are available through the 2021 Navigator notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) forecast. The notice is posted on the grants.gov website.

HHS Releases Open Enrollment Report

HHS’ 2021 marketplace open enrollment report shows more than 12 million consumers nationally selected a marketplace plan during the 2021 open enrollment period — a 5 percent increase from 2020. Of the 2021 enrollees, 79 percent were returning customers, compared with 75 percent in 2020.
