The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has updated with 2021 data the Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, available to the public on CMS’ Care Compare website. The update is the second since CMS revised its methodology to include the use of peer grouping in 2020.

The refresh also includes updated data found in the Provider Data Catalog, including:

  • health care–associated infections;
  • timely and effective care;
  • unplanned hospital visits;
  • complications and deaths, including surgical complications, infections, and 30-day death rates;
  • payment and value of care;
  • Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey results;
  • Outpatient and Ambulatory Surgery Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems; Survey results for ambulatory surgical centers and hospital outpatient departments;
  • Prospective Payment System–Exempt Cancer Hospital Quality Reporting Program results; and
  • Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model data.
