CMS Announces $114 Million ACO Initiative

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a $114 million Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Investment Model for ACOs participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP). This funding will be available to up to 75 ACOs to bring better care coordination to rural and underserved areas. ACOs will use the funding to invest in infrastructure and redesign care processes. The funding will be offset through savings earned by the ACOs.

To be eligible, ACOs have to have joined the MSSP in 2012, 2013, or 2014 or will join the program in 2016. The application deadline for eligible ACOs who joined the MSSP in 2012 or 2013 is Dec. 1. Applications for other eligible ACOs will be available in summer 2015.
