Association to Survey Members on Uncompensated Care

America’s Essential Hospitals has launched a member survey to capture the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage expansion on essential hospitals. The survey will gather timely information on uncompensated care that will be critical as we continue to educate policymakers on the important role our members play in their communities. We hope to gather information in advance of the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission’s (MACPAC’s) first annual review and report to Congress on the need for Medicaid disproportionate share hospital (DSH) payments. The MACPAC report will focus on changes in the number of uninsured, amounts and sources of uncompensated care costs, and data to identify hospitals that have high levels of uncompensated care.

This first edition of the survey focuses on the first two quarters of calendar years 2013 and 2014. Going forward, the survey will be distributed to members once every quarter. This distribution schedule will allow us to quantify a portion of the challenges our members face and share aggregate information with policymakers.

Members are encouraged to complete the survey by Dec. 3. Please contact Xiaoyi Huang, director of policy, at 202.585.0127 or xhuang@essentialhospitals.org with questions.
